The ways in which an individual gets into the possession of a work of art are as diverse as our life stories. We may have inherited them from our parents or distant relatives, bought them as passionate collectors, occasional buyers or investors, got them as presents or even found them abandoned in the street. Irrespective of how we got them, we are now owners of art objects and have the duty to care for them.
Unfortunately it is all too often that art work is fragile. They start changing
the moment they are finished by the artist. Inevitably physical and chemical
changes occur as part of the ageing process or through partial destruction.
In many cases the deterioration process can be accelerated by unstable or
improperly used materials, or by an unhealthy environment: humidity or draught,
heat or light and especially their great oscillation; biological infections,
polluted atmosphere, neglecting, improper or unprofessional interventions
for conservation and restoration.

The work of a restorer is often unseen, unspectacular as compared to the creative act of an artist, but although not called work of art, his / her activity can tell and substitute a lot.
The interventions of a restorer can be of real help in saving, identifying,
authenticating and expertise of an art work, which is so essential in the
present context, a necessity for personal collections, museums and art market.

In many cases works of art have undergone previous restoration. Each treatment
is also an interpretation of the work of art, inevitably being influenced
by the new ideas, laws and ethics of restoration. Even though we benefit
from better restoration techniques, such influence cannot be avoided. For
all these reasons, a minimal intervention is the most beneficial for a work
of art. We can never be sure of how future generations will treat art of
the past. The less the conservator interprets, the more it is possible for
future generations to have their own vision and ideas about the work of
art.

We are aware that there is a need for exhaustive knowledge of the work of art and consequently of the use of all information gathered in the restoration process as well as stating the identity of the work of art to be restored.
For our specialists, apart from using the proper materials for restoration,
it is very important to have a good communication with the client. Before
taking any further steps, the painting is closely examined for a correct
evaluation of its state, if necessary there will be a complex commission,
a minute documentation and research of the object will be performed, the
necessary operations will be settled as well as the time and materials required
for the restoration.
The client is presented a treatment proposal which describes in detail the
result wished by both sides and also an alternative treatment, if this is
possible. A final report will be made during restoration, with detailed
photos and documents, including the entire intervention, from the initial
state through the different phases of restoration to the final state, including
post-restoration recommendation for a better preserving over time.
Our specialists strictly obey rules imposed by the “Venetian Carta”, respecting theoretical and practical norms of international ethics.
